LIFE RecOrgFert PLUS was honored to be represented at the prestigious “Soil Health: Current Status and Future Needs” conference, held in Chania, Greece, from October 7th to 9th, 2024. The conference brought together scientists, policymakers, and key stakeholders from across Europe to discuss the latest developments in soil health, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices, climate change mitigation, and soil protection.
Konstantinos Zoukidis, a key partner from AFARM and representing the LIFE RecOrgFert PLUS project, delivered a presentation titled “Effect of an organo-mineral fertilizer produced by recovered sulfur & orange wastes on winter wheat growth as a sustainable mitigation of soil desertification.” His speech underscored the growing challenge of desertification across Europe, where approximately 8% of the territory is already impacted, and the pressing need for sustainable solutions.
The presentation emphasized how chemical fertilizers have been detrimental to soil fertility, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Zoukidis discussed how the LIFE RecOrgFert PLUS project aims to address these challenges through innovative solutions based on organic-mineral fertilizers derived from recovered sulfur and citrus waste. This approach improves crop growth and soil biodiversity and aligns with the EU’s Green Deal objectives of reducing chemical fertilizer reliance and promoting the circular economy.
